The Challenge
The Village of Wauwatosa embarked on a massive, three-phase streetscape project to restructure roads, parking, and public spaces. The primary challenge was to mitigate the negative impact of construction disruptions on local businesses while simultaneously rebranding the district to align with its new, modernized identity.
The Strategic Approach
As the lead strategist and designer, I managed the end-to-end rebranding process, focusing on brand consistency and strategic immersion to build anticipation rather than frustration.
Comprehensive Rebranding – I developed a new visual identity system, including a new logo, a cohesive color palette, and a functional website, ensuring all touchpoints communicated a refreshed, "quaint yet modern" brand promise.
Proactive Construction Detour Campaign – Instead of traditional, functional detour signage, I conceptualized a "fresh approach" campaign. This initiative used construction as a marketing tool, building excitement around the upcoming changes.
Strategic Wayfinding Integration – I integrated elements of the new lighting and wayfinding systems into the detour campaign, offering citizens a "hint" of the final streetscape design. This approach reinforced the new brand identity while construction was still underway.
The Outcome
The detour campaign successfully shifted public perception, turning a necessary disruption into an opportunity for brand engagement. This project demonstrates my ability to manage complex urban branding initiatives, balancing long-term brand goals with immediate tactical communication needs.
